First-Year Common Reading Program author to visit campus Aug. 21

Mobile, Ala. – Over the summer, first-year students at Spring Hill College were assigned to read “A Pearl in the Storm,” a true story by Tori Murden McClure, the first woman to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean.  

Students will have the opportunity to hear from McClure at a special program at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21 in Byrne Memorial Hall. Small group discussions will follow the presentation. The summer reading is part of the college’s First-Year Common Reading Project, coordinated through the office of student affairs.

Eight Spring Hill Teams Win Scholar Team Awards

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has recognized eight Spring Hill College athletic teams with its annual Scholar Team Award.

Recognized for their academic achievements during the 2009-10 school year, this marks the third consecutive year that over half of the intercollegiate sports teams at SHC have received the prestigious award.

Eichold Gallery announces 2010-11 schedule

MOBILE, Ala. – The Eichold Gallery at Spring Hill College has announced the 2010-11 exhibition schedule.

GREEN/BLACK, an exhibition that reflects the college’s theme “Renew the Face of the Earth,” opens the fall lineup. The works in the show are created from recycled materials, celebrate the natural world, or speak of the environmental crisis in the Gulf. The show will run Aug. 29 through Sept. 24. An opening reception is set for 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 2.

Faculty and staff to participate in "service day" July 29

Mobile, Ala. – Spring Hill College faculty and staff will participate in a special community “service day” Thursday, July 29, 2010.

The day honors St. Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits). Ignatius directed the Jesuits to be “leaders in service to others,” and Spring Hill College’s mission is to “form students to become responsible leaders in service to others.” The college is celebrating its 180th year, continuing the 450-year-old Jesuit Catholic tradition of educational excellence.

Spring Hill part of transfer articulation agreement with Alabama's community colleges

Mobile, Ala. – Spring Hill College has entered into a transfer articulation agreement with the Alabama Community Colleges System designed to allow students at two-year colleges to transfer to bachelor’s degree programs at four-year independent colleges and universities.  

Students to return to El Salvador this summer

MOBILE, Ala. – Two members of the class of 2011 at Spring Hill College will travel to El Salvador this summer. In February, Cory Bronenkamp of St. Louis, Mo., and Michael Lysek of Summerdale, Ala., participated in an immersion trip with Campus Ministry to El Salvador. They were so moved by their experiences in Central America that they arranged to revisit El Salvador over the summer break.

Bronenkamp, an English major, and Lysek, a biology/pre-medicine major, depart for El Salvador May 31. Bronenkamp plans to stay until June 18 and Lysek until July 3.

Broussard receives prestigious award from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education

Mobile, Ala. – Spring Hill College assistant professor of communication arts Dr. Sharee Broussard has been awarded one of the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education’s (CASE) most prestigious awards.

Broussard’s doctoral dissertation, “Source-Message-Receiver in Integrated Marketing Communication: A Study of U.S. Institutional Advancement” has been chosen as the Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation winner for the 2010 Alice L. Beeman Award for Outstanding Research in Communications and Marketing for Educational Advancement.

Spring Hill College to host Summer Colloquium on Spirituality

MOBILE, Ala. – “Thomas Merton and Interreligious Friendship” is the featured topic for this year’s Summer Colloquium on Spirituality offered by the Spring Hill College theology department June 6-8, 2010. Sessions are held from 7 to 9 p.m. nightly in Byrne Memorial Hall on campus.

Carmody has written his second book for Paulist Press, “The Gospel of Mark: Question by Question.” Spring Hill College will host a book signing and brief author’s talk during the Summer Institute of Christian Spirituality Wednesday, June 9, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the Gautrelet Room in the Lucey Administration Center on campus.
