Celebration 2013: A Time to Remember
Spring Hill College is celebrating the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” with events throughout the spring semester. The College was cited in this historic document, written April 16, 1963, for its leadership in the struggle for civil rights.
January: A Time to Praise

February: A Time to Honor
"A Day Without"
- Tuesday, Feb. 19
- On this day we will honor the contributions of African-American inventors and by seeing what it would be like if we had to live without their inventions.

- Wednesday, Feb. 20, 7 p.m.
- Byrne Memorial Hall
- Boyle, the founder and executive director of Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles, will speak to the campus community.
SGA Badger Brawl Scaveger Hunt
- Wednesday, Feb 20
- The Student Government Association will host a scavenger hunt highlighting black history and integration at Spring Hill College.
Alumni Day of Service
- Saturday, Feb. 23
- 9 a.m. to noon, followed by lunch at 12:30 on SHC campus
- Mobile community
- The Mobile Chapter of the Spring Hill College National Alumni Association will host a day of service to the Mobile community.
Black History Month Trivia
- Tuesday, Feb. 26
- 9 p.m., McKinney's at the Hill, Student Center
- Ballin' Badgers will host this event.
"When Worlds Collide: A Celebration of Diversity"
- Thursday, Feb. 28
- 5:30 p.m., LeBlanc Room, Student Center
- Senior seminar project by Gabrielle Edgerson, communication arts student. Attendees will hear brief presentations by a student, a faculty member and an alumna who will share their experiences with diversity on and off of Spring Hill’s campus.
March: A Time to Experience
Learning Communities Civil Rights Tour
- Saturday, March 2
- Montgomery, Ala.
- Learning Communities will visit the Rosa Parks Museum, The Civil Rights Memorial Center, and tour the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church and Parsonage.
Jabali Afrika
- Tuesday, March 5
- 8 p.m., Student Center
- Powerful percussion & big vocals; African melodies on a wide variety of instruments and vocal harmonies that are the foundation of modern rock, jazz, gospel, blues and more.
"Homeless Not Hopeless"
- Friday, March 15
- Mobile community, Spring Hill College campus
- Members of our learning communities will engage in a service project in the local community and then sleep in boxes on Rydex Commons for one night.
April: A Time to Reflect
Dr. King's Sermons

- 9 a.m. to noon, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
- St. Joseph Chapel
- Dr. King's sermons will play in the chapel throughout the day. Members of the Spring Hill community are invited to pray and reflect on his messages.

- History Museum of Mobile, 111 S. Royal Street
- The History Museum of Mobile is sponsoring a public reading of the “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” featuring a dozen readers from Mobile’s diverse community.
