Christian theology is one of the oldest, richest and most challenging intellectual traditions in western culture.  The classic definition of theology, "faith seeking understanding," emphasizes that this discipline is a true science, with its own criteria of analysis and critical reflection, and at the same time is based on faith, the human encounter with the mystery of God.

Spring Hill offers a variety of programs to meet the needs of all students.  The graduate programs in theology and ministry attempt to fulfill with a special intensity certain goals articulated in the College's Mission Statement: namely:

  • "To awaken and deepen a mature sense of faith, a reflective and personal integration of reason, faith, and justice."
  • "To develop a sense of the interrelatedness of reality and the ultimate integration of knowledge, rooted in the mystery of God and revealed in the Incarnation of the Word, Jesus Christ."

Spring Hill College grants three graduate degrees in theology: the M.T.S. (Master of Theological Studies), the M.P.S. (Master of Pastoral Studies), and the M.A. (Master of Arts). Students who have not completed a bachelor's degree may enroll on the undergraduate level. They may pursue either the C.T.S. (Certificate of Theological Studies) or the B.A. (Bachelor of Arts) in theology. Graduate level certificates are also available in the areas of Spiritual Direction/Faith Companioning and Pastoral Ministry.  Most courses are offered for undergraduate or graduate credit with separate and distinct requirements for each level.

The program is comprehensive in nature. With the completion of a graduate degree in theology, students are expected to have acquired:

  1. A significant body of theological knowledge
  2. A well-honed set of intellectual and research skills crucial to work within the discipline of theology
  3. A capacity for critical reflection on religious issues and phenomena
  4. A set of general academic competencies necessary for doctoral studies and/or professional work

These programs offer the challenge of serious theological reflection as a preparation for ministry or as professional updating and personal enrichment. Courses are taught out of the Catholic tradition, from a contemporary, ecumenical perspective and have attracted students from a diversity of backgrounds: teachers, nurses, lawyers and business professionals, lay ministers, and Catholic and Protestant clergy.

Spring Hill College offers its graduate programs in theology & ministry not only at the main campus in Mobile, but also in cooperation with the local Catholic diocese in Atlanta, Ga.; Birmingham, Ala.; and Jackson Miss. The three off-campus programs (Atlanta, Birmingham, Jackson, MS) are an integral part of Spring Hill's graduate theology programs.
