Admission Requirements for Master of Arts in Teaching

The general policies for graduate programs in the Spring Hill College Bulletin of Information apply to this program. Students applying for admission to graduate teacher education programs should complete the application process at least one month prior to the beginning of the term.

Required documents for admission to the MAT program

  • Completed application for admission
  • Official transcripts
  • Background Check Suitability Letter from DEP — a copy of the letter from the AL State Department of Education stating that, your background check review has been completed and you have met suitability criteria for admission to a teacher education program
  • Two (2) Letters of Recommendation
  • Laboratory/Internship Agreement
  • Submission of standardized test scores

Unconditional admission

Unconditional admission to the MAT program will be granted to applicants with a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, a grade point average of at least 3.0 and compliance with other criteria. An original onsite essay, interview, and letters of recommendation are also required.

Conditional admission

Conditional admission may be granted to applicants with a bachelor’s degree and an undergraduate cumulative grade point average not lower than 2.5, upon the recommendation of the Director and with the approval of the Vice President for Academic Affairs. Applicants for conditional admission will be required to meet all conditions for unconditional admission before progressing beyond six graduate hours.

Alabama Certification Requirements

Student who wish to reinstate a lapsed Class B certificate may enroll for up to 12 semester hours of graduate course work. Students who successfully complete the 12 hours may apply those hours toward an MS degree. In this case, all criteria for full standing must be met to progress beyond the first 16 hours of course work.
