In continuing with a tradition that dates back to the roots of Spring Hill College’s Jesuit heritage, undergraduate and graduate students will walk down the Avenue of the Oaks on Saturday, May 5 to have their degrees conferred by President Christopher P. Puto, PhD. Joining Puto and other keynote speakers will be Rev. James Martin, SJ, editor at large of America magazine.
Martin is a bestselling author who has written for many publications, including the New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, and he is a regular commentator in the national and international media. He has appeared on all the major radio and television networks, as well as in venues ranging from NPR’s Fresh Air, FOX’s The O’Reilly Factor and PBS’s NewsHour to Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report.
Before entering the Society of Jesus in 1988, Martin graduated from the Wharton School of Business and worked for General Electric. In 2017, Pope Francis appointed him to be a Consultor for the Vatican's Secretariat for Communication.
"Fr. Martin very thoughtfully and spiritually articulates how we in the Church, as the Mystical Body of Christ, can follow in Jesus' footsteps when we reach out to all in His name,” said President Puto. “Fr. Martin is truly living the Jesuit mission of being a man for others, and we are delighted to welcome him to our campus."
