Spring Hill College is pleased to announce Sister Barbara Reid, OP, will present the 2018 Suarez Lecture on January 29, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. in the Gautrelet Room on campus. The event is open to the public and admission is free.
Reid’s lecture, “Reading the Scriptures with the Mind, Eyes, and Heart of a Woman,” will focus on feminist biblical interpretation, explaining what biblical interpretation from a woman’s perspective is, when it began, how it is used and its importance to both men and women. She will conduct an exercise in interpreting the death and resurrection of Jesus in the Gospel of John using this perspective.
Barbara Reid is a Dominican Sister of Grand Rapids, Michigan. She holds a master’s degree in Religious Studies from Aquinas College and a PhD in Biblical Studies from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Notably for this lecture, Reid is General Editor for Wisdom Commentary Series, a new 58-volume feminist commentary on the Bible (Liturgical Press). She is the author of Abiding Word: SundayReflections(3 Volumes, Liturgical Press, 2011-13), Taking Up the Cross: New Testament Interpretations Through Latina and Feminist Eyes (Fortress Press, 2007), The Gospel According to Matthew, New Collegeville Bible Commentary Series (Liturgical Press, 2005), Choosing the Better Part? Women in the Gospel of Luke (Liturgical Press, 1996) and many other books and journal articles. Her latest book is Wisdom's Feast: An Invitation to Feminist Interpretation of the Scriptures (Eerdman’s Press, 2016).
