Spring Hill College to offer Summer Colloquium on Biblical Spirituality
MOBILE, Ala. — Spring Hill College’s Summer Institute of Christian
Spirituality will offer a new program for continuing education or
personal enrichment in June. The Colloquium on Biblical Spirituality is
designed for participants to engage a topic in depth with no prior
academic experience, assigned readings or reflection papers. As a
non-credit program, the Colloquium is designed for anyone seeking a
deeper understanding of biblical spirituality but who are not able to
spend a whole week of reading and studying. The Colloquium on Biblical
Spirituality is set for June 5-7, 6:30- 9:30 p.m. Moorer Hall on
campus. The cost is $75 for any or all of the sessions.
Dr. Timothy R. Carmody, professor of theology and director of graduate
theology at Spring Hill, will present “Sons and Servants; Kings and
Highwaymen: Jesus‚ Parables of the Other.” The Parables of Jesus are
intended to transform the hearers, to bring about a change of mind and
heart. Many of the parables are about relationships that emphasize
differences – differences of wealth, social position, authority,
religion and age. The twists in the relationships of the parable
characters challenge our own assumptions about authority, social
position, wealth and “otherness.”
Parables to be discussed include the parable of the Prodigal Son, the
Lost Sheep, the Two Sons, the Good Samaritan, the Unforgiving Servant,
the Workers in the Vineyard, and the Great Feast.
Carmody is a graduate of the Catholic University of America and a
longtime member of the Catholic Biblical Association where he is
co-chair of the Task Force on Miracles. Paulist Press published his
first book, “Reading the Bible,” in 2004. His second book, “Mark,
Question by Question,” is near completion. Carmody is also a popular
speaker around the region, giving lectures on topics such as “The Dead
Sea Scrolls,” “The DaVinci Code,” and “Pompeii.”
Rooted in its Catholic heritage and continuing the 450-year-old Jesuit
tradition of educational excellence, Spring Hill College offers
programs of theological studies at four locations in the Southeastern
U.S.: Mobile, Atlanta, Birmingham and Jackson, Miss.
