Author Da Chen to speak to incoming students
MOBILE – Annually, all entering Spring Hill College freshmen and transfers take part in the college’s First-Year Common Reading Project. For the project new students are asked to read a book prior to the start of their first semester at Spring Hill. The goal of the project is to promote community through the common experience of reading and discussing a thought-provoking text. A different book is selected each year by a committee of faculty and staff. Da Chen’s “Colors of the Mountain” was named the 2008 selection.
Students will have the opportunity to hear from the author, Da Chen, during Opening Weekend. He will address new Spring Hill students on Aug. 23 at 2 p.m. in Byrne Memorial Hall. Immediately following Da Chen’s presentation, students will engage in small group discussion about “Colors of the Mountain.”
Da Chen grew up in the deep south of China and arrived in America at the age of 23 with $30 in his pocket. He attended Columbia University School of Law on full scholarship, and upon graduating, worked for the Wall Street investment banking firm of Rothschilds, Inc.* The learn more about the author and read an excerpt from “Colors of the Mountain,” visit www.dachen.org.
