MOBILE, Ala. – Alyse Granier of Des Allemands, La., a junior integrated communications major at Spring Hill College, is the recent recipient of the Mobile Chapter of the Public Relations Council of Alabama’s Bettie Hudgens Memorial Student Award. The $500 award is named in honor of a beloved teacher, advisor and public relations practitioner who served Spring Hill College and the Mobile community for more than 30 years.

Granier serves as president of the Public Relations and Advertising Association (PRADa), vice president of publicity for the Student Government Association, and a SHAPe student retreat leader. She also volunteers for numerous on-campus and community service activities, including the Mobile Arts Council, Children’s Miracle Network, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and the University of South Alabama Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

“I am honored to be a part of Bettie Hudgens’ continued efforts to support the communications department and the students she lovingly served for 34 years,” Granier said. “If she were with me as I receive the scholarship in her memory, I would thank Mrs. Hudgens for her investment in my future and promise that I will do my best to live the same life of service to the students of Spring Hill College.”

“Alyse is like a sponge, absorbing ‘best practices’ from the industry, its professionals and their organizations and bringing this information to the students involved with PRADa and within the Communication Arts/Graphic Design and Marketing majors,” said Sharee Broussard, communication arts instructor and faculty advisor for PRADa at Spring Hill College. “Alyse is a true leader because she encourages and supports others who share her vision. SHC students interested in advertising and PR have been intertwined with local professionals throughout the year. The group has had tremendous community presence this year – because of her.”

The Bettie Hudgens Memorial Student Award is open to full-time students enrolled at Spring Hill College, the University of Mobile or the University of South Alabama. The applicants must be active members of their public relations student organizations, have completed sufficient coursework to be classified as a junior, and have at least a 2.7 overall GPA and a 3.0 GPA in their major. Applications must include a reference letter from their faculty advisor and a portfolio of their college public relations experience.
