Friends of the Spring Hill College Library to present readings of Don Marquis Jan. 15
Dec. 16, 2008
Mobile, Ala. – Friends of the Spring Hill College Library board member and actor/director Daniel Mainwaring, along with a cast of actors, will present a reading of selections of the writings of Don Marquis on two beloved cartoon characters, Archy and Mehitabel. The reading of Marquis’s hilarious characterizations is set for 7 p.m. Jan. 15 in Moorer Hall, room 101, on the campus of Spring Hill College.
Marquis (1878-1937) entertained many people through his work for newspapers and magazines. His mastery of characterization elevated the humble cartoon to the level of sophisticated wit, anticipating the appeal that “New Yorker Magazine” cartoons have had for so long. Interest in Marquis’ work is quite alive, as is testified by the republications of his collected writings. Over the years notable offshoots include “Archy and Mehitabel,” dubbed a “back-alley opera” starring tenor Jonathan Anderson and soprano Mignon Dunn, and “Shinbone Alley,” a 1957 Broadway musical starring Carol Channing and Eartha Kitt.
Light refreshments will be served, and a donation of $5 is requested. For further information call (251) 479-1976.
