Dr. David Sauer publishes 'David Mamet’s Oleanna'

MOBILE, Ala. – Dr. David Sauer, professor of English at Spring Hill College, has his latest book, “David Mamet’s Oleanna,” published this month in England and the United States by Continuum books in their new series, Continuum Modern Theatre Guides.
This book is a guide for theater and literature students and faculty to Mamet’s controversial play about sexual harassment, which premiered in 1992 in the wake of Anita Hill - Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings. Mamet’s work is particularly prominent now as he had two plays revived on Broadway in the fall, “American Buffalo” and “Speed-the-Plow”; “Oleanna” is about to be revived by Julia Stiles (pictured on the cover of Sauer’s book) in Los Angeles.
The book examines how Mamet puts the burden on the audience to fill in gaps in the play’s narrative, leaving the actors to perform without safety net. The play provokes loud disagreements of audiences exiting the theatre, or remaining behind to discuss it. In this way it demonstrates how sexual harassment may be seen in the eyes of each participant quite differently.
