Dr. Michael Young is Christus Institute speaker Feb. 17
MOBILE, Ala. - Dr. Michael Young, professor in the Great Books Honors College and director of the Master of Liberal Arts program at Faulkner University, will present "Beyond Dogmatism and Relativism: Christian Faith in a Post-Modern World" at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17 in Byrne Memorial Hall on the Spring Hill College campus. His presentation is part of the Christus Theological Institute's lecture series.
Just as the ancient mariner Odysseus, faced the perils of sailing between the two mythological monsters of Scylla and Charybdis, so too Christians face the dangers of being overwhelmed by a close-minded dogmatism on the one side of our cultural context and an open-ended, unknowing relativism on the other. Drawing upon classical and Christian sources, Young will explore how one can hold to assured claims of knowledge and yet maintain a humble openness to the many variables and changes in life.
Young is a graduate of Abilene Christian University and holds a B.S., M.S., and M.Div. in biblical studies, and a Master of Arts and Ph.D. from the University of Dallas. While serving as director of Faulkner's Institute of Faith and the Academy, he founded the "Journal of Faith and the Academy" and serves as co-editor.
The Christus Theological Institute is a grassroots consortium of Mobile Bay area churches joined in the quest to promote a deeper understanding of the Christian faith. The institute is housed at Spring Hill College.
The event is open to the public. Admission is free for Christus members and $2 for guests. For more information on this and upcoming Christus events, visit www.shc.edu/christus or contact the SHC theology department at (251) 380-4458 or email@example.com.
