Bagot is Christus Theological Institute lecturer Nov. 17
MOBILE, Ala. - Dr. Matthew Bagot, assistant professor of theology at Spring Hill College, will present “Christian Faith and the Politics of Peacemaking” on Thursday, Nov. 17, 2011 as part of the Christus Theological Institute lecture series. The lecture is scheduled for 7 p. m. in Byrne Memorial Hall on the Spring Hill College campus.
Bagot teaches social ethics with a focus on religion and international politics at both the graduate and undergraduate level at Spring Hill. After teaching a course at the Spring Hill Italy Center in Bologna this past summer, he participated in the program’s study tour of the Balkans, where he personally met with Franciscan priest Rev. Ivan Markovic and visited some of the peacemaking initiatives, including schools and an astonishing multi-religious choir in Sarajevo. Markovic has developed multi-ethnic, interreligious initiatives among Jews, Christians and Muslim in Bosnia, in order to move beyond the centuries-old culture of hostility.
For 2,000 years, Christians have been called to embody the forgiveness and reconciliation offered to them by Jesus Christ. During this lecture Bagot will explore what this call might mean for us today given our war-torn world. In particular, he will examine how a number of contemporary peacemakers bring forgiveness and reconciliation to bear on the complex political realities of their homelands.
A native of England, Bagot began his university studies in Scotland, then worked on his M.A. in philosophy at Emory University and completed his Ph.D. is in theological ethics at Boston College. He joined the SHC faculty in 2007.
