MOBILE, Ala. – In spring 2011, Spring Hill College welcomed its inaugural group of students to the Italy Center, a study abroad initiative in Bologna. While students participating in program are able to apply their scholarships and financial aid toward tuition, room and board, they are responsible for paying airfare and other travelling expenses out of pocket.

Two Spring Hill seniors majoring in communication arts propose a scholarship specifically for students attending the Italy Center. Caroline Gernhauser of New Orleans, La., and Emily Stewart of Mount Juliet, Tenn., hope to raise $5,000 that will help to ease the burden of these out-of-pocket costs.

“When researching the Italy Center I was not able to find a scholarship to help my financial needs,” said Ellen Broad, a senior education major from Chicago. “I was fortunate enough to go to Italy in the summer of 2011, but it would have been nice to have had a scholarship to fall back on.”

Fundraising activities Gernhauser and Stewart have planned include collecting donations and hosting a community dinner for Spring Hill alumni, students, faculty and staff.
