MOBILE, Ala. – The Spring Hill College men’s basketball team cruised to a 73-58 SSAC victory over the visiting Auburn University Montgomery (AUM) Warhawks on Thursday night at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.

The Badgers wasted no time in heating up from the outside as sophomore guard Todd Martin of Mobile dropped in his first four 3-point attempts and Spring Hill built as much as a 28-point bulge at 41-13 with six minutes left to play in the first half.

AUM (5-19, 2-12 SSAC) rallied to make it an 18-point game at 46-28 going into the intermission, but by then the Badgers had the game firmly in hand.

Three minutes into the second half Spring Hill once again held 21-point advantage at 54-33 before AUM used a 13 to 4 run to cut the lead down to 58-46 with 11 minutes remaining in the game. The rally would prove too little too late, however, as the Warhawks could draw no closer and the Badgers maintained a healthy 15- to 18-point lead for the remainder of the contest.

Freshman center Jake Thelen of Edgewood, Ky., had 21 points for the Badgers while Martin finished with 20 points including six 3-point baskets. Sophomore forward Alex Looney from Mobile’s Murphy High School added 12 points and sophomore guard Charles Gordon of Birmingham, Ala., had 10 points. Senior point guard Stephen Burches of Hammond, La., handed out 12 assists.

As a team, the Badgers shot 44.6% (25-56) from the field and canned 38.9% (7-18) of their 3-point attempts while suffering just 11 turnovers and dishing out 22 assists. Spring Hill (11-10, 6-8 SSAC) will next host the Dillard University Bleu Devils (1-23) in a non-conference contest on Monday at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center beginning at 7 p.m.
