Spring Hill senior Cale Finta wins fiction writing award
FAIRHOPE, Ala. – Cale Finta, a senior creative writing major at Spring Hill College, is the undergraduate winner of the Fairhope 2012 Fiction Prize, awarded by the Gulf Coast Association of Creative Writing Teachers.
Originally from New Orleans, Finta lives in Berkeley, Calif. His winning piece of fiction, “Early Man,” is his first publication.
Jon Chopan, judge of the fiction contest, said of Finta’s work, “What I enjoyed most about Early Man was how strange I felt while I was reading it. Somehow the character and his metamorphosis began to creep up on me, began to draw me into his anguish, into his loneliness. From the opening lines I was compelled to read this tale, compelled to follow it to its end, and it is also true that I was very pleased with where the journey took me.”
Gulf Coast Association of Creative Writing Teachers brings together teachers of writing, students, writers, editors, and publishers from Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, and others from the Gulf Coast region. For more information, visit www.gcacwt.com.
