Mobile, Ala. – A hands-on defense training program for students who serve as residence hall advisors at Spring Hill College has received national recognition from the National Residence Hall Honorary organization (NRHH).

The Rape Aggression Defense System, or R.A.D., is a program of realistic, self-defense tactics and techniques and is a comprehensive course for women that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and risk avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training.  The R.A.D. training, conducted in August by several college public safety officers who are certified trainers, was named community service program of the month by NRHH.

“This program provides a woman with the knowledge to make an educated decision about resistance,” said Laury Rowland, training coordinator and Spring Hill public safety officer. “Students receive 12 hours of progressive training from several Spring Hill College public safety officers who have become trained instructors for this program. They have utilized the skills attained through this defense system to make other female students and staff members aware of ways to increase their personal safety.”

The three-day class for all female resident advisors was offered at no cost. The class is designed to train female resident advisors how to defend themselves and to make them aware of other individuals around them who could become possible victims of rape. The R.A.D program not only promotes awareness, but it also helps women feel more empowered to handle unexpected situations.

The National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) is an integral component of the National Association of College and University Residence Halls, Incorporated (NACURH), and strives to recognize the top 1 percent of student leaders living in college and university housing at NACURH member schools. NRHH encourages the development and continued commitment to leadership within the areas of recognition, community service, and scholastics on the local, regional and national levels.
