Dr. Stephen Schuler to present Christus Lecture Nov. 29
MOBILE, Ala. – Dr. Stephen Schuler will present “Poetry and Truth: W. H. Auden's Augustinian Aesthetics” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29 in Byrne Memorial Hall on the Spring Hill College campus. Schuler’s talk is part of the Christus Theological Institute lecture series.
When the Anglo-American poet W. H. Auden (1907-1973) returned to the Anglican faith of his childhood in his early 30s, his newfound theological commitments raised many practical and ethical questions about the nature of poetry and about his moral and professional obligations as a poet. Is there such a thing as “Christian poetry” or “Christian art”? Why should a Christian write or read poetry at all? Are there topics a Christian poet should or should not write about? What about censorship? What about political involvement? It was the works and theology of St. Augustine who helped Auden answer these questions about his art. This lecture will share insights into Auden, his re-discovered Christian faith, and the influence of St. Augustine, as explored in detail in Dr. Schuler’s forthcoming book.
Schuler holds a Ph.D. in English from Baylor University and is an assistant professor of English at the University of Mobile, where he teaches British literature and honors English. He has published articles on W. H. Auden and John Milton, and his book on Auden, “The Augustinian Theology of W. H. Auden,” being published by the University of South Carolina Press, is expected in 2013.
Housed at Spring Hill College, the Christus Theological Institute is an ecumenical consortium of Mobile Bay area churches joined in the quest to promote a deeper understanding of our Christian faith.
The event is open to the public. Admission is free for Christus members and $2 for guests. For more information on this and upcoming Christus events, contact the Theology Department at (251) 380-4458 or email@example.com.
