Spring Hill representatives to attend AJCU conference June 18-21

Many of the finest Jesuit minds in the world will converge in Chicago this June to address the complex issues facing higher education today. These academic leaders, representing each of the United States’ 28 Jesuit colleges and universities, will explore challenges regarding academic quality, strategic planning, enrollment management, financial stewardship, and student experience.

The goal of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities, in its 10th year, is to contribute to the formation of administrators in Jesuit colleges and universities who will, in the words of St. Ignatius Loyola, “Go forth and set the world on fire!”

AJCU representatives from Spring Hill College include Dr. Jamie Franco-Zamudio, assistant professor of psychology; Dr. Sharee Broussard, associate professor of communication arts; and Jonathan Strickland, associate director of admissions.

Dr. Franco-Zamudio is thrilled with the opportunity to participate in the AJCU seminars. “I chose to work at SHC because of the sense of community and the fact that there is a strong adherence to the concept of Cura Personalis among faculty, staff, and students,” said Dr. Franco-Zamudio. “I am looking forward to learning the best practices for ensuring that the students receive an education steeped in the Jesuit tradition—particularly the commitment to campus diversity and service to others.”

Strickland is certain the AJCU experience will be invaluable for working with students in Spring Hill’s Admissions Department. “As a graduate of Spring Hill College, I know firsthand what a Jesuit education instills in an individual. Attending this seminar will allow me the opportunity to examine the ways that Spring Hill lives the ideals and traditions established by the Jesuits,” Strickland said. “The unique aspects of each of the 28 Jesuit schools in the United States form a great whole. … I am excited to gain a deeper understanding of the characteristics SHC contributes and how to best introduce these attributes to high school students around the country.”

Participants must be nominated by school presidents and may include senior administrators, academic department chairs, and selected delegates whom presidents identify as having key leadership responsibilities or potential. Current and past Jesuit university presidents serve among the faculty, including Spring Hill College’s Rev. Gregory F. Lucey, S.J.

The seminar has been a project of the 28 presidents of Jesuit colleges and universities since 2003. Led by Sr. Maureen Fay, OP (past president of the University of Detroit Mercy), AJCU has grown in reputation and popularity to become a respected crossroads of conversation in Jesuit higher education. This year’s AJCU Leadership Seminar will take place on the Lakeshore Campus of Loyola University Chicago from June 18-22, 2013.
