Rev. Gregory F. Lucey SJ, Chancellor of Spring Hill College since 2015, has informed the Board of Trustees and President E. Joseph Lee II, PhD, of his intention to retire from his full-time duties as Chancellor. In this role, Fr. Lucey led the College as Mission and Identity Officer, was a member of the College Cabinet as well as liaison to the Board Committee on Trustees and Mission and Identity.
Fr. Lucey’s roles and responsibilities throughout his tenure at Spring Hill College helped bring progressive change to the College. He was Spring Hill College President from 1997 to 2009, and during this era, launched a significant, campus-wide building and improvement enterprise. The enterprise outlined the development of a campus masterplan for renovation or construction and included the Marnie and John Burke Memorial Library, the Mary Lou and John Barter Student Center, restorations of St. Joseph Chapel as well building new residence halls. To accomplish this, Fr. Lucey was instrumental in raising the needed funding for these projects and by 2010, the campus plan was completed. Fr. Lucey was appointed as the College Chancellor in 2013 and then led the campus with an additional Presidential appointment from 2013 to 2015 before re-assuming the Chancellorship in 2015.
From July 1, 2011 until 2013, Fr. Lucey served as President of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities based in Washington, D.C. He has also served as the President of the Jesuit Conference USA, Rector of the Jesuit Community at Marquette University and Vice President for Development at Seattle University. Fr. Lucey founded and served as Director of Marquette’s Center for Ignatian Spirituality and, in 1995, he attended the 34th General Congregation of the Society of Jesus as one of 200 delegates worldwide. He has served as trustee of Xavier University, Loyola University New Orleans and Marquette University. He has been involved with the activities of Heartland/Delta from the consortium’s inception. A Wisconsin native, Fr. Lucey entered the Society of Jesus in 1951 and was ordained in 1964.
Fr. Lucey holds a PhD in Educational Administration from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, an MA in Liturgy from the University of Notre Dame, as well as undergraduate and graduate degrees in Philosophy, Theology and Education from Saint Louis University.
“I deeply appreciate the opportunity to be able to serve with the people of Spring Hill College for most of 22 years. And, I appreciate the generosity of so many that made the transformation of the campus possible, but, even more, I am grateful for the deepened sense of our Jesuit mission that we have been able to embrace as a community.” Fr. Lucey commented.
“Fr. Lucey’s vision for Spring Hill College throughout the years brought growth and new life to the College while continuing to best serve the Jesuit, Catholic educational needs of the students. We are honored to have had his leadership and devotion to our mission,” said E. Joseph Lee, PhD, President, Spring Hill College.
Fr. Lucey will remain on the Spring Hill College campus and continue in roles that include assisting with mission formation, fundraising, pastoral ministry and public relations opportunities. Rev. Robert Poirier SJ, Rector of the Jesuit Community, will assume some of Fr. Lucey’s duties in his new role as Mission Officer for the College, effective immediately.
