COVID-19 Update from President Joe Lee 3/12

Dear Spring Hill family,

Provost Marc Manganaro has shared a message to our faculty regarding the possibility of Spring Hill transitioning to online learning in case the coronavirus becomes a larger threat to our area. I want to be sure everyone is aware of that possibility.

As I've conveyed in earlier messages, we are closely monitoring COVID-19 and its implications for our campus. The College’s Emergency Management Team has been in a planning phase for weeks to coordinate any changes to our campus life, if needed.

We are NOT at the point of closing the College or changing our current academic operations, but we are preparing as a precaution. To help with specific needs related to Academics, Dr. Manganaro has convened an Instructional Continuity Task Force. We believe the best way to enable students to complete the semester is to prepare to move instruction online.

As of today, there are no reported cases of COVID-19 in Alabama. Testing recently started in our state and the Alabama Department of Public Health as well as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have advised Higher Education to prepare for possible disruptions to normal campus life.

Our Welcome to The Hill event for 2020 freshmen, at this time, is still scheduled for March 21. However, we have decided that it’s prudent to postpone our Homecoming on The Hill activities, scheduled for the weekend of March 27. Instead, we will host Homecoming on The Hill and Family Weekend October 23-25, 2020.

I also want to share that the College is suspending any unnecessary College-related travel for the time being. Please contact your cabinet Vice President if you feel you have a critical travel need.

I realize this is a lot of information to convey to you today and may not answer all of your questions. I will continue to update you whenever needed. I also understand that you are concerned about your families, friends and loved ones during this unprecedented time in our country. Please take care of yourself and those you care for. And please know that Spring Hill is here for you, whatever you may need. We’ll get through this together. Our prayers will lift up our efforts.

I thank you for your professionalism, your calm and your willingness to make things happen quickly and with concern for the greater good.

Joe
