- Reflections on Pope Benedict’s visit to the United States
Christian theology is one of the oldest, richest and most challenging intellectual traditions in western culture. The classic definition of theology, “faith seeking understanding,” emphasizes that this discipline is a true science, with its own criteria of analysis and critical reflection, and at the same time is based on faith, the human encounter with the mystery of God.
Degree programs in Theology & Ministry include the Master of Theological Studies (MTS), the Master of Pastoral Studies (MPS), the Master of Arts in Theology (MA), and the Bachelor of Arts in Theology. Certificates available include: the Certificate of Theological Studies (CTS), the Certificate of Spiritual Direction / Faith Companioning (CSD), the Certificate of Pastoral Ministry (CPM), and the Certificate of Ecclesial Ministry (CEM). Continuing education programs are also available and vary by location.
These programs offer the challenge of serious theological reflection as preparation for ministry or as professional updating and personal enrichment. The courses are taught out of the Catholic tradition from a contemporary, ecumenical perspective, and are designed primarily for students who are working full time in their professions or homes: lay men and women from a variety of backgrounds including: both Catholic and Protestant clergy, religious educators, teachers, nurses, lawyers, business professionals, and pastoral ministers.
As part of its mission and commitment “to serve as an educational resource for the Catholic community of the Southeast,” Spring Hill offers its adult programs in theology and ministry in partnership with the local diocese, not only at its main campus in Mobile but also in Jackson, Mississippi; Birmingham, Alabama; and Atlanta, Georgia. Graduate and undergraduate degrees and certificates can be earned at all locations or classes can be taken for personal enrichment.
The Summer Institute of Christian Spirituality is specifically designed for adults seeking to deepen their faith and to explore the vast traditions of Christian spirituality. Each June, two one-week sessions are held on the main campus in Mobile followed by two one-week sessions in Atlanta. The curriculum is designed to study a wide variety of spiritual masters and mystics, along with biblical, liturgical and social themes. To further add to the breadth of the Institute, Spring Hill faculty are joined each year by well known visiting faculty. The academic coursework is enhanced by the cultivation of a faith community, through daily liturgical prayer and personal sharing.
