(Mobile, Ala.) – A new movie filmed in Mobile called “Spring Breakthrough” will be premiering Sunday, April 30 at 6 p.m. on the Hallmark Movies & Mysteries channel. Filming took place around several locations in Mobile including Spring Hill College campus.
Working with the Mobile Film office, location managers contacted the College back in February. Filming was coordinated in several locations on campus including Yenni Hall, near the Fairways Apartments and the courtyard of the Lucey Administration Building. Spring Hill’s President, Mary H. Van Brunt, PhD, is a Hallmark movie fan and makes a brief cameo appearance during the proposal scene. Other locations in Mobile include the Mobile International Airport at Brookley and parts of Gulf Shores.
The story follows a single mother surprised by her daughter’s recent engagement, who travels to Gulf Shores where she finds love unexpectedly. The film stars Keesha Sharp, Demetrius Grosse, Rhyon Nicole Brown, and Akono Dixon. The movie was directed by Mykelti Williamson, the actor who played Bubba in “Forrest Gump.” Williamson previously appeared in the film Convergence shot in Mobile in 2014. In May 2019, motion picture firm Lionsgate Films was on Spring Hill’s campus to film part of the movie, “ I Still Believe,” a Christian-themed film about country music star Jeremy Camp. The film starred KJ Apa, Britt Robertson, Shania Twain, Melissa Roxburgh, and Gary Sinise. Many of the spaces and buildings around campus were used as a backdrop for the film and appeared in the trailer. The movie was released in theaters in March 2020.
Spring Breakthrough is the second Hallmark movie to be filmed in Alabama since December 2022. The first film, A “Nashville Legacy,” was filmed in Birmingham right before Christmas and premiered on February 26.
