Lady badgers’ soccer team makes program history

Mobile, Ala. – The Spring Hill College women’s soccer team (7-7-3, 4-5-3 GSC) made history on Sunday after shutting out West Alabama (3-9-3, 2-7-3 GSC), 4-0, at Library Field. The Badgers capped off a record season by clinching a spot in the 2024 Gulf South Conference Women’s Soccer Championship for the first time in program history.
 
The victory over the Tigers marks the first in program history and the best regular-season finish (7-7-3) in the team’s Division-II era. Spring Hill also earned its spot in the GSC Women’s Soccer Championship for the first time ever.
 
Valeria Aguilera Martinez led the senior day shutout win with a pair of goals in the first half, four shots and three shots on goal. Zaria Myers joined in on the celebration with a goal of her own and a perfect 1.000 shooting percentage. Poppy Binding registered a penalty kick goal and an assist alongside six shots, two of which were on target.
 
Spring Hill controlled the match from start to finish, taking 13 shots and placing six on target while only allowing two shots total from West Alabama. The Badgers also generated chances on eight corner kicks and allowed just two from the Tigers.

Aguilera Martinez tallied both of her goals in the first half, in the 12th and 24th minutes, giving the Badgers a 2-0 lead going into halftime. Myers was assisted by Binding in the 48th minute, extending the Spring Hill lead to 3-0. Binding capped off the historic 4-0 win with a penalty kick goal in the 83rd minute.
