Spring Hill College Statement on the Derek Chauvin Verdict

Dear Spring Hill College family,

Our Campus and the country have heard the verdict against Derek Chauvin from the trial in Minneapolis, Minn.  Now is a time for reflection, patience, and prayer while the names of George Floyd, Daunte Wright, Adam Toledo, Breonna Taylor – and too many others – continue to resonate. Violence against people of color at the hands of the police has left many of us saddened and angry. One incident is too many; we denounce injustice of any kind.

As a Campus community, we have faced many challenges in this last year. We have turned to each other and to Christ for support and guidance during these times. Since 1830, Spring Hill College has been inclusive, welcoming, and respectful for people of all backgrounds. We have a long-standing history of civil and human rights and promoting solidarity with the entire human family.

In our community of living and learning, we are committed to the Jesuit tradition of “cura personalis,” a care for the spiritual, social and intellectual growth of each person. True to our Catholic and Biblical tradition, we nurture both the personal and social dimensions of faith, seeking to draw our students into a deeper and more vital relationship with God. It’s what we do, every day, reflected in how we treat each other, every day.

We want to acknowledge the anxiety, pain and anguish that many in our campus community are feeling and recognize the impact on the physical and mental health of these deeply troubling incidents. As we face the days ahead, we acknowledge that many are still processing the impact of today’s news. Let us be mindful of self-care as we urge you to seek help if you need it and take advantage of resources available to you, here on our Campus:
