The program in Performing and Media Arts engages students in practical and theoretical explorations of live performance forms, from the adaptation and staging of texts, to the exploration of rituals and festivals, to the study of performance in everyday life, acting (on and off camera), cinema and media studies, film and media production, spoken word, and other areas in performing and media arts.
Students in the program enter the world of performance and performance theory as an important and emerging field of study and are challenged to think creatively, critically, and historically about the world around them as they identify and interpret the power of image, sound, gesture and movement, and cultivate their own artistic voices. Students will apply their interdisciplinary knowledge through a senior synthesis project that results in a creative presentation, documentary, ethnographic visual text, or other multimedia production.
The minor in performing and media arts gives students insight into theatre, media production, and writing. This minor is great for students who want to stay in touch with their creative side and expand their imagination and writing skills.
Graduates with a minor in performing and media arts will have an overview of the artistic and technical skills needed to develop compelling media productions. These skills are highly valued by employers that are looking for individuals who embrace creativity and artistic expression.
“I was exposed to a wide diversity of plays both in the classroom and on stage, which allowed me to broaden, as well as, sharpen my skills as an actor. It also afforded me the chance to work as director, which deepened my knowledge of stagecraft.” — Ryan Nocito
The arts are systems of communication that teach us about human interaction and creativity in problem solving.
