Teacher Education

Spring Hill College offers two graduate degrees in teacher education: (1) The Master of Science (MS) degree for persons who hold Alabama Class B certification or who are eligible for the certificate, and (2) The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree for persons who have a bachelor's degree in a field other than education. Completion of all requirements for either degree leads to Alabama Class A (master's level) teacher certification. Up to nine semester hours of appropriate transfer credit from another institution may be accepted toward the master's degree - If the credit was earned before admission to Spring Hill College.

Areas of study for the teacher education degrees (MS & MAT) include:  Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Secondary English Language Arts, Secondary General Social Science, Secondary History.

Master of Science

The Master of Science (MS) degree may be pursued by persons who hold, or are eligible for, Alabama class B teacher certification. A program plan is developed for each graduate student in order to assure that, within certain parameters, each person's needs are met. In addition to free electives, each plan reflects a combination of program requirements and the student's choice of course options. Students pursuing the MS degree take courses reserved exclusively for graduate students.

Attention is given to meeting special needs of students through course advisement, and classes are scheduled to accommodate practicing classroom teachers. Inservice teachers can complete a program in approximately two years by taking courses in the summer and at night during the regular school year.

Master of Arts in Teaching

These programs are designed for persons whose baccalaureate degree is in a field other than education. The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) curriculum allows prospective teachers to integrate knowledge gained through undergraduate course work into graduate studies in education. The curriculum also provides for laboratory experiences in school settings prior to the culminating internship. Classes are scheduled to accommodate both full-time and part-time students. Most students complete the program in about two years.

The Master of Liberal Arts

The Master of Liberal Arts (MLA) at Spring Hill College is designed to provide students the structure to design an academic specialization that clearly reflects their professional and personal needs.  The underlying premise is that interdisciplinary study leads to intellectual independence and satisfaction not always found in discipline-based programs of study.  The program is based on three common objectives of liberal arts education:

  1. an appreciation of students own intellectual and cultural heritage
  2. the intellectual breadth appropriate to participants and leaders in public life
  3. an appreciation of diverse cultural traditions

To achieve these objectives, the program's curriculum combines four elements: the core curriculum, five elective courses, a diversity requirement, and the capstone course.

While the MLA is an opportunity for self-discovery, it can also serve as a vehicle to a new career or means of increasing expertise in a respective field.  Concentrations available include:  Fine Arts, Leadership & Ethics, Literature, History & Social Science.  Students may also complete the Graduate Certificate in Leadership and Ethics  or the Graduate Certificate in Studio Art as part of the MLA degree, depending on the concentration selected.
